Hello and Welcome

The History of the Breach Family

Hello, my name is Alison Vainlo, formerly Breach, and this is the story of my Breach ancestors, from the present day back to the 1500's. My genealogical journey starts in Sussex and travels the length of England, with overseas visits to Canada and the United States too, with many other family names linked in along the way. If you are a Breach or related to a Breach then this blog is the site for you.

How to Use this Site

I have arranged the posts on this site so that they start from the earliest Breach generations and come forward in time as you read down. Following on from the main Breach Ancestral Line posts are the Branch Line posts, followed by the Associated Family Line posts and finally, some stand alone, general interest posts. You will find a full list of posts in the right sidebar.

At the top of this page you will find the tabs, that's where you will find interesting articles, ancestral charts, a list of surnames associated with the Breach family, general information, and a guide to researching your family history.

The blog has been through a recent 2022 update, so new information and better photos have been added. Those who have visited before may remember the Photo Gallery in the tabs? Unfortunately I deleted it by accident after many weeks working on it, so for now that is missing however, I have added more photos to the posts themselves to make up for that.

-----

To differentiate between different branches of the family I have used the following keys throughout the site:

G = Generation - a letter 'G' is used on all posts pertaining to the Main Ancestral Line (the Breach pedigree line). This is followed by a number denoting which generation the post is about - e.g. G1 - is the earliest Breach family and G12 the most recent.

BL = Branch Line - the letters 'BL' are used on posts pertaining to Branch Lines included on this site. They are deviations from the Main Ancestral Line but are still Breaches. The numbers following the letters 'BL' are there just to identify the post.

AL = Associated Line - the letters 'AL' are used on posts pertaining to Associated Family Lines. These are families of other surnames linked to Breaches by marriage. The numbers following the letters 'AL' are there just to identify the post.

RP = Relationship Path - stand alone posts showing direct relationships between family members. The numbers following the letters 'RP' are just to identify the post.

Find posts by using the right sidebar, ancestral charts and surnames index. Posts contain links to each other as well as as other relevant pages. There is also a search facility in the right sidebar.

I hope you enjoy your visit to the Breach Family History blog, all comments are welcome.

---------------

First Generation
G1 - William Breache and Elizabeth Barnett 1595 - 1637

William Breache was born in 1595 in Herstmonceux, Sussex. Nothing is known of his parents at this time. He married Elizabeth Barnett on the 18th of January 1619 in Wartling, Sussex. No further details for Elizabeth are available at this time. They had eight children as follows, all born in Herstmonceux apart from Elizabeth who was born in Dallington:

  1. Elizabeth (b. 1621)
  2. Mary (b. 1623)
  3. Agnes (b. 1625)
  4. William (b. 1627)
  5. Thomas (b. 1630) (d. 1630)
  6. Isabel (b. 1632) (d. 1669) Married Goddard Yonge 5 Jun 1666, Herstmonceux.
  7. Sarah (b. 1635) (d. 1635)
  8. Thomas (b. 1637) (d. 1709) Thomas continues the main ancestral line below.

Note: For a long time many genealogists researching Thomas Breach married to Clemence Fryar have named his parents as George Breach and Mary Pickhurst of Buxted, believing their son Thomas born in 1640 went on to marry Clemence Fryar because that was what the research suggested. But now, thanks to new research carried out by a lady in Queensland, Australia it has now been proved that Thomas, son of George and Mary, was buried at just 19 days old in Buxted, in 1640.

Further research carried out by the lady in Australia and verified by another source found that Thomas who married Clemence Fryar was actually born in 1637 and that his parents were most likely to be William Breache and Elizabeth Barnett.

I have been able to verify some of this myself, so on that basis I have now changed the parents of Thomas from George and Mary to William and Elizabeth.

Second Generation
G2 - Thomas Breach and Clemence Fryar (1) and Susannah Ashdown (2) 1637 – 1709

Thomas was born in 1637 in Herstmonceux, Sussex, the son of William Breache and Elizabeth Barnett. He married Clemence Fryar (b. 1642)(dau of Nicholas Fryar and Elizabeth Meritie) on the 30th of May 1661 in Eastbourne. They had eleven children, all born in Eastbourne, as follows:
  1. Nicholas (b. 1662) Nicholas continues the main ancestral line below.
  2. Jane (b. 1665) (d. 1666)
  3. Elizabeth (b. 1666) (d. 1666)
  4. Elizabeth (b. 1668)
  5. John (b. 1670)
  6. Mary (b. 24 Jul 1672)
  7. Anne (b.1674)
  8. Judith (b. 1676) Married William Paine 20 Jul 1704, Eastbourne.
  9. Jane (b. 1678)
  10. Michael (b. 1681) (d. Jul 1681)
  11. Sarah (b. 1681) (d. 1681)

The last two children were twins and appear to have died soon after birth. Clemence did not survive long after giving birth, she was buried in July 1681 along with her son Michael.

----------

Thomas Breach Second Marriage 1681

The marriage of Thomas Breach to Susannah Ashdown seems to have caused considerable confusion among those researching this line. For a long time it was assumed by many that Thomas and Clemence must have had a son called Thomas around 1662 due to the age of Susannah (she was born in 1663), but no-one ever found a baptism record for a Thomas during this time period. It is now becoming accepted that Thomas, widower of Clemence Fryar is the same Thomas who went on to marry Susannah Ashdown.

Surmising that Thomas was left with a brood of small children following the death of Clemence and their twins, he married again quickly. In fact, if the records are correct it seems he may have married Susannah before his previous wife had even been put in the ground!

The marriage of Thomas Breach and Susannah Ashdown is recorded as taking place on the 1st of July 1681 in East Dean. They had four children of their own as follows, all were baptised in Eastbourne:
  1. Susannah (b. 1685)
  2. Sarah (b. 1688)
  3. John (b. 1689) John continues in Branch Line BL1 - Suffolk Breaches 1662 - 2008
  4. Katherine (b. 1692)

Susannah died in 1706 and Thomas died in June 1709.
